What is EMDR

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing) is a method of therapy we use to rewire the brain and heal past traumatic experiences. Broken down: EM: eye movements – think about this is what you do when you’re sleeping and your eyes are moving back and forth.

D: Desensitization – think of it this way, you have a memory or an event that happened in your life, and you have certain emotions and feelings about that memory, and they get all jumbled together. During the desensitization process, we break those things apart. You still have the memory, but the emotions are much less intense.

R: The reprocessing phase. Think of your brain with neural networks like a big bundle of Christmas tree lights and what we do in the reprocessing phase is start to untangle them and build new neural networks or new pathways with more adaptive beliefs.

What can EMDR be used for?

Well, there are a lot of things. I most often use it for repetitive behaviors or patterns in life, or, for example, addictive behaviors. It can be used for anxiety. And it’s really good for people who have trauma. Big T, little t [trauma], doesn’t really matter, but any type of experience that are holding people back from being their best selves.

I like EMDR a little bit more than hypnotherapy, because in the process EMDR tends to be less emotional, less intense, and tends to produce results quicker. And anyone can do it. For example, Prince Harry recently did a special where he used EMDR to get over the death of his mother, Princess Diana.

So that is EMDR therapy. Hope that was helpful!
